METER PROJECT FAQ's

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HAVING A METER?
  • Conserve Water (estimated at 30%+) which will allow the company to better meet demands of the system in drought years, and decrease the likelihood of watering restrictions.
  • Allow individuals to review their monthly watering consumption and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Allow MGSWC to bill shareholders based on water usage.  Users who overwater will be penalized by paying higher rates
What is the Meter Project?/ Why is MGSWC installing Meters?
Utah Division of Natural Resources commissioned a report in 2018 noted a reduction in secondary water use of 33.7 percent once a meter is installed. This report has led to numerous bills and discussions at the Utah State legislature to consider the requirements for metering. Currently, State Law does not require the metering of water for existing residential connections, but the discussion is ongoing and we expect that the State will eventually require metering of all residences in Utah. The State does understand how valuable it is to conserve water, and they have already started a loan program for Cities and Secondary Companies to begin the installation of meters.  In 2019 MGSWC was able to secure a loan from the State to help install meters on all shareholders
WHO PAYS FOR THE METER?
  • MGSWC has secured a loan with the State of Utah that will help pay the upfront cost of installing meters.  The company will be responsible for paying this loan back over 15 years.  Once all the meters are installed then MGSWC will be able to bill users based upon water usage and with a tiered billing structure, we don’t anticipate any big jump in water cost for shareholders.

Will I be billed based on water usage?
Yes,  starting in 2024 MGSWC will  once for the annual base rate and then at the end of the year you will be charged if you exceed your allotted water volume. Allotment details are here.
Where will the Meters be installed?
The Meters will be installed in the park strip (or immediately behind the sidewalk), where your irrigation/secondary water connects to the system.  There is a public utility easement that runs along with the park strip throughout the neighborhood, the meters will be installed within this utility easement.
Who is responsible for meter maintenance and replacement?
The Meters will be MGSWC property and as such MGSWC will be responsible for maintenance and replacement of meters.

FAQ's

I don’t have a lawn or won’t be using any secondary water this year. Why do I still have to pay?
Mountain Green Secondary Water is a non-profit, shareholder company, and being connected to the system you are a shareholder.  The company’s operation cost are constant cost, meaning the cost associated with your share of water (water rights, storage, etc.) are incurred by the company whether you use your share of secondary water or not.  Being a shareholder company we need full participation from all shareholders.

If you refuse to pay, then MGSWC will put a lien on your property.  This lien will only be released once the account is current with all prior billing and associated fees.
Can I pay with a credit card?
No.  At this time we don’t have the capability of accepting credit cards.  Mailing checks into our office is the preferred payment method.
We are ready to install our landscaping what do we need to do?
NO installing lawns between June 15th and September 1.  Lawns that are attempting to establish growth in the peak summer months use substantially more water.

Please, refer to our illustration (link below) for proper installation of green box, filter, and personal turn off value.  Once you have everything installed please contact the water office and we will have the water master turn your water on at the street level.
